Situated in the Hudson Valley near New Platz, the MSPR on the Shawangunk Mountain Ridge is one of the better area mountain bike rides. Trail surfaces are a mix of bedrock, gravel, rock, sand and dirt. Minnewaska trails are a variety of flats, long uphills, long downhills and rolling hills. This type of riding will either make your quads burn because of the long ascents or make your eyes water on the extended downhills.
The Castle Point Carriageway is an ancient carriage road (9 mi. / 1000) carved into the Catskills steadily snakes its way up to the Castle Point knoll atop Shawangunks Ridge. The view from here is of a dense cover of pitch pines and, in the distance, a cresent-shaped glimpse of Lake Awosting. The loop starts from the park gate and heads up Upper Awosting Carriageway to the Castle Point Carriageway. The return route is along the Lake Minnewaska Carriageway.
Overall, Castle Point Carriageway is the 5th most popular mountain bike trail of all 48 mountain biking rides in New York. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Castle Point Carriageway including Blue Mountain Reserve, 909 Trail and Clarence Fahnesock State Park.
