Located eight miles west of Asheville Airport, several great singletracks can be accessed from the Trace Ridge Trailhead. A variety of loops can be formed from the seven one-way singletracks which total 20 miles.
To reach the mountain biking trailhead from Asheville, follow SR26 to SR280 (Airport Exit). Head west on SR280 for 3.5 miles to SR1345 (a.k.a. North Mills River Road). Continue west on SR1345 for 5.5 miles as it turns into FS1206. Just before the North Mills Recreation Area, head north on FS479 (a.k.a. Wash Creek Road). Proceed up for 2 miles to the first road on the left and follow it across the river up to the Trace Ridge Trailhead.
Start riding north on the Trace Ridge Trail (#354 / 3.1 mi.) to the northern terminus at the Spencer Gap Trail (a cool short side-trail) and Spencer Branch (#146 / 2.3 mi.). Head southwest down the gnarly Spencer Branch trail to the Fletcher Creek Trail (#350). Continue south to the forest road and mountain bike ride east to the parking area.
Overall, Trace Ridge / Spencer Gap is the 7th most popular mountain bike trail of all 24 mountain biking rides in North Carolina.
