The Wichita Mountains are the oldest range on the North American continent and therefore virtually eroded away. What is left is jagged Granite slopes and cliffs, trails of small loose rocks to head and boulder sized and some individual rocks that form entire slopes. They also support the largest buffalo herd.

Within Fort Sill, an old army artillary range, is a network of biking trails; the climbs are short and steep and the descents are dangerous and intimidating. The trails are well defined through usage and there is constant climbing and descending, although some milder terrain can be negotiated if you look for it. The best time to mountain bike ride is winter and spring. This is rattle snake, tarantula, tick, poison ivy and scorpion territory and can be quite uninviting when the weather warms up.

To reach the mountain biking trailhead from US44, take the Cache Rd exit at Lawton, OK and travel west to Fort Sill. Park at the desiginated area and mountain bike ride the eastbound double track military trail to the top of the ridge. Then follow the trail down a rocky fast descent into a rocky creek bed. Follow the trail through all kinds of single track, trees, washes, and fun and exciting encounters. Return via the same route. If youre not too tired you can attack the western portion of the course which is military fire road, unimproved and eroded. Its rough and definitely dual suspension territory.

Overall, Fort Sill Trails is the 2nd most popular mountain bike trail of all 9 mountain biking rides in Oklahoma.
