Dragons Back Trail For Mountain Biking

Northwest of Roanoke in the Jefferson National Forest, the Dragons Back trail is an awesome route.

To reach mountain biking at the Grouse Trail Trailhead from US81, use Exit #141. Follow SR419 to the bottom of the hill and turn right on SR311. Follow SR311 up and over Catawba Mountain. At the bottom of Catawba Mountain is Virginia 779. Stay on 311 for 4.9 miles, until you see a sign on the right that says "Wildlife Road." Take a right here. Take this road for 3.4 miles, until you come to a clearing. A 1- by 2-foot sign clearly marks the Grouse Trail on the right.

Overall, Dragons Back Trail is the 8th most popular mountain bike trail of all 27 mountain biking rides in Virginia. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Dragons Back Trail including Seven Sisters Trail, Tract Fork Trail, Channel / Crawfish Rock Trails and Laurel Fork Trail.
