West of Cottonwood and northeast of Prescott near Jerome, the Mingus Mountain Loop is a 16.6 mile loop open to off-road motorcycle trails riding. The trail follows a long narrow shelf road with views of the Verde Valley.
To reach the trailhead from Cottonwood, head west on SR89A through Jerome. A few miles past Jerome, look for FS104 on the left side of the road. Head southeast on FS104 to FS413 (aka Allan Springs Road). This could be a nice place to park. The loop follows FS413 around Mingus Mountain and heads north to Jerome.
If you are looking for a nice downhill run, you can head down FS493 into Cottonwood for a 4,300 foot descent!
Note: A section of FS413 passes through a private inholding owned by Phelps Dodge Mining. There is no public easement, but as of July 2006, the mining company was permitting access.
Overall, Mingus Mountain ORV Loop is the 9th most popular dirt bike trail of all 46 dirt biking rides in Arizona. Several of the better dirt bike trails are nearby Mingus Mountain ORV Loop including Alto Pit Riding Area, Crown King Riding Area, Sheridan Mountain / Smith Mesa, Tonto Wash ORV Trail, Old Military Trail, Hayfield Draw - Bryant Park ORV Area and Seven Mile Gulch Trail.
