North of Crested Butte in the Gunnison National Forest, Gunsight Pass Road is open to off-road motorcycle trails riding. Gunsight Pass Road is an abandoned mine access road. This is a steep, rocky five mile climb up 3,000 feet to Gunsight Pass starting just south of Oh Be Joyful campground. Get ready for a lot of switchbacks -- they seem endless!
The trailhead is located on Slate River Road. There is a signed turnoff and plenty of parking. Note: youll need to ford the Slate River since the bridge is out -- so make sure to go after the snow has melted.
Note: Colorado residents must register their off-highway vehicle with the Colorado State Parks (303) 866-3437. Non-residents are not required to register in Colorado, if they are registered in their home states. All off-highway vehicles must have an approved muffler and spark arrester. These requirements are subject to change so make sure to contact the Colorado State Parks prior to using your off-highway vehicle.
Overall, Gunsight Pass Road is the 29th most popular dirt bike trail of all 90 dirt biking rides in Colorado. Several of the better dirt bike trails are nearby Gunsight Pass Road including Pearl Pass, Texas Lakes Trail, Colorado 500, Timberline Trail, Doctors Park and Taylor Pass Divide Road.
