North of Tampa and east of Brooksville, the 145,000 acre Withlacooche State Forest has pine uplands, cypress swamps and river bottom woodlands. Off highway motorcycle and ATV users will find many miles of trails from easy to challenging that are spread over 2,600 acres. The terrain ranges from hardwood hammocks and tight scrubs, to numerous pits left from discontinued mining operations.
To reach the trailhead from Tampa, follow US75 north to Exit 301. Turn left heading east on US98 over the highway. Look for the entrance road quickly on the right (north) side. All area users must enter at the entrance located at I-75 and US98/SR50 behind the Quality Inn.
Note: the ATV crowd tends to use the second parking area, which is located about 4 miles further down the access road (it has restrooms and a shower).
To reach the trailhead from Brooksville, head east on US 98/SR 50 approximately 11 miles. The entrance is on the left, just before the I-75 overpass.
Note: As of July 2008, the State Of Florida requires riders under 16 years old to have taken an approved OHV safety course and to carry proof of course certification.
Overall, Croom Motorcyle Area is the 1st most popular dirt bike trail of all 18 dirt biking rides in Florida. Several of the better dirt bike trails are nearby Croom Motorcyle Area including Sunshine Moto-X, Bartow Motocross and Dade City Motocross.
