Sand Mountain Recreation Riding Area Dirt Biking

Southeast of Reno and Fallon, the Sand Mountain Recreation Area is located in the high desert of west central Nevada and is open to dirt biking. Managed by the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the sand dunes of the 4795 acre recreation area provide challenge and excitement for many types of off-highway vehicle use. Spring and fall offer the best weather at Sand Mountain. Mid-winter months can be cold and wet and summer days can be hot, dry and windy. Razorbacks or slipfaces exist at the top of the mountain and many of the surrounding dunes. The mountain is constantly shifting. Be careful when you top out.

Use of a fluorescent orange whip flag, extending at least 8 feet above the ground level when the vehicle is stopped, is MANDATORY on ALL Off-Highway-Vehicles (OHVs) using the recreation area. Lighted whip masts should be used at night.

To reach the trailhead from Reno, head east on US80 towards Wadsworth. Exit onto US50 heading east. Continue through Fallon. Sand Mountain Recreation Area is located 25 miles southeast of Fallon.

Note: to protect sensitive species, a trail system has been implemented using red and green markers. The trails marked in green are open to riding. The trails and areas marked in red are closed.
