North of Syracuse and southeast of Altmar in Oswego County, the 8,700 acre Happy Valley Wildlife Management Area has 28 miles of off-road motorcycle trails riding over 2,500 acres. This is easy to intermediate riding through wooded, rolling terrain. There are an additional 11 miles of trails currently under development.
The dirt biking trails are maintained by the Oswego County ATV Club and a club membership is required to ride these trails. Once you have a club membership, it is very important to stay on the designated trails and do not ride on any private property. These rules are being strictly enforced and you WILL be ticketed. Also, local landowners are watching and reporting in an attempt to close down these trails.
Enjoy the beauty the forest and all that nature has to offer as you travel through the woods on this expertly groomed trail. Winding turns, moderate hills and a variety of riding surfaces make this trail most enjoyable, even for the most experienced riders.
To reach the Altmar dirt biking trailhead from US90 (NY Thruway), use Exit 31. This exit heads to SR8 and Utica. Turn right on North Genesee Street. Then, Turn right on Auert Avenue. This merges westbound into SR5. At SR49, turn left on SR49 N. This merges westbound on SR69 towards Rome. Next, turn right on SR13 (aka CR69). Continue and turn right on SR104. Follow SR104 to the intersection with Churchill Road. You may park at the DEC Operations Building, but do not block cars or parking lot traffic.
Overall, Altmar Trails is the 7th most popular dirt bike trail of all 30 dirt biking rides in New York. Several of the better dirt bike trails are nearby Altmar Trails including Camden Trail, Broome-Tioga MX, Thunder Ridge Cycle Park, Unadilla Motorsports, Frozen Ocean Motocross and MotoMasters ParkSavannah Motocross Park.
