Northeast of Downieville in the Tahoe National Forest, there are several trails open to offroad motorcycle riding and horseback riding. Starting from Downieville, the moderate Second Divide Trail and Third Divide Trail form a 7 mile loop. From the intersection of the 2nd and 3rd Divide Trails, the Butcher Ranch Trail continues northeast for another 4 miles. The Pauley Creek Trail is a 3.5 mile side trail off the Butcher Creek Trail.
To reach the trailhead from Downieville at the post office, head east for 0.5 miles crossing the Downie River Bridge. Continue on the dirt road for 2.7 miles to the Second Divide Trailhead on the right.
