Near Cass Lake in the Chippewa National Forest, a 68 mile stretch of the North Country Trail passes through the Chippewa National Forest. The west end is 5 miles west of Walker and the est end is nine mile east of Remer. The hiking trail threads around numerous lakes, wetlands and hardwood forests. While the eastern portion is flat, the western section is rolling.
North of Grand Rapids in the Suomi Hills Recreation Area, the Suomi Hills Trail is a 21 mile hilly backcountry trek weaving among lakes. The hiking route is through rugged, heavily timbered terrain with numerous lakes.
