Southeast of Geneva in the French Alps, the town of Chamonix (pop. 9700) is known as the alpine capital of Europe under the shadow of Mt. Blanc (15,000). It attracts hardcore summer and winter sport enthusiats, and the name of the game is extreme. The region is central to hundreds of miles of tracks and trails.

Near town, a must try hiking trek is the Grand Balcon Sud & Nord, which are about 5km each and run a rim within the tree line below the massifs. Get ready for spectacular vistas.

To reach this area from Geneva, head southeast on Route A40, and then southeast on Route N205 into Chamonix. For Chamonix nightlife, check out Bar de Moulins or L'Arbate.

Overall, Chamonix is the 4th most popular hiking trail of all 14 hikes in France. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Chamonix including Petit Balcon Nord, Petit Balcon Sud, Hikers Haute Route, Tour Du Mt Blanc, La Flegere and Les MottetsLognan.
