Southeast of New Bern and Havelock in the Croatan National Forest, the 22 mile Neusiok Trail travels from a cypress-lined, sandy beach on the Neuse River to beautiful estuaries of the Newport River, where live oaks are sculpted by the wind. Along the way, the trail meanders through bottomland hardwoods, pine savannas and forests.Keep an eye out for venus fly traps and alligators. There are two mid-route shelters for dry camping above the muddy ground.
The northern terminus is at the Pine Cliff Recreation Area. The southern terminus is in the salt marshes that are along the Newport River.
To reach the hiking trailhead from Havelock, head east on SR101 for 5.3 miles. Turn left on SR306 (Ferry Road) for 3.3 miles. Turn left on FS132 for 1.7 miles to the Pine Cliff Picnic Area at roads end.
Overall, Neusiok Trail is the 7th most popular hiking trail of all 19 hikes in North Carolina.
