Southwest of Missoula in the Lolo National Forest, the 5,500 acre Blue Mountain Recreation Area has a vast network of trails open to hiking, including the 8 mile Blue Mountain National Recreation Trail. To reach the trailhead from Missoula, follow US 93 (Reserve St.) south to Blue Mountain Road (CR30). Turn right heading northwest on Blue Mountain Road for 0.5 miles and park at the main area near the junction with FS365.

Overall, Blue Mountain National Recreation Trail is the 15th most popular hiking trail of all 19 hikes in Montana. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Blue Mountain National Recreation Trail including Sawmill-Curry Trail System, Easthouse National Recreation Trail and Lolo Trail.
