Located southwest of Ellijay off SR76, a 5.6 mile hiking loop rolls the ridges around Carters Lake Ridgeway Recreation Area. Hikers pass through mountain vegetation along high ridges that overlook deep clear water, then descend to cross small creeks. Trail features include a mixture of trail and narrow logging roads along with challenging climbs, stream crossings and technical downhills. Orange trail marker posts are easy to follow with arrows pointing the direction along the entire loop.

Overall, Carters Lake Recreation Area is the 6th most popular hiking trail of all 22 hikes in Georgia. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Carters Lake Recreation Area including Coosa Backcountry Trail, Panther Creek Trail, Jacks River Trail, Bull Mountain Trail, Mountaintown Creek and Fort Mountain State ParkNorth Pocket.
