Southeast of Port Angeles and south of Sequim, the Dungeness Trail / Gold Creek Trail is an amazing 18 mile horseback ride combines the Dungeness Trail (#833) with the Gold Creek Trail (#830) and a short stretch of road. This remote route runs through a deep valley which is heavily forested. The trails at times traverse narrow, steep sided slopes with mossy rock outcroppings. Just getting to the trailhead can be a challenge at times -- the final segment (1 mile) of forest service road is periodically closed due to local disputes.

To reach the trailhead from Port Angeles, head east on US101 past Sequim. Proceed south on Palo Alto Road for about seven miles. At the fork, veer left up onto the dirt FS20 for about 0.9 miles. At the next fork, veer right heading south down onto FS2860 which is unsigned and maybe closed. Proceed another 1.1 miles passing NFS East Crossing CG (also maybe closed) and park on road at Gold Creek trailhead.

Continue riding south up FS2860 another 0.5 miles to the Dungeness River trailhead. A rigorous hike-a-bike ascent begins for about 2 miles. Once on top of Three Oclock ridge, a wild descent runs down to the river. After seven miles, turn left onto FS2860 climbing east for about 4 miles. Look for another Gold Creek trailhead on the left and follow the trail back down 7 miles to the car.

Overall, Dungeness Trail - Gold Creek Trail is the 26th most popular hiking trail of all 56 hikes in Washington. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Dungeness Trail - Gold Creek Trail including Mount Rose Trail, Duckabush Trail, Dry Creek Trail, Lower South Fork Skokomish Trail, Jupiter Ridge Trail and Mount Muller TrailLower Big Quilcene Trail.
