West of Baltimore near Ellicott City, the 14,500 acre Patapsco Valley State Park stretches 35 miles from Ellicott City to Sykesville along the Patapsco River. It encompasses several distinct recreation areas and has over 170 miles of trails.

The Avalon, Hilton, and Orange Grove recreation areas have 19 miles of rolling wooded trails open to hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians.

To reach the trailhead from the Baltimore, follow US95 to Exit 47 (BWI Airport). Head east on US195 to Exit 3. Turn right heading south on US1. Turn right on South Street. The park entrance is on the left. Park at the Visitor Centor.

Overall, Avalon/Hilton/Orange Grove Areas is the 6th most popular hiking trail of all 20 hikes in Maryland.
