Hiking The Beartown State Forest

The 11th most popular hiking trail in Massachusetts.

Near Monterey in the southern Berkshires, the Beartown State Forest is the trailhead for over 25 miles of hiking trails. The Appalachian Trail passes through the park near the scenic Benedict Pond.

To reach the forest from the Mass Turnpike (Rte. I-90): Take exit 2 to Rte. 102 west to Rte. 7 south. Follow Rte. 7 to Rte. 23 east toward Monterey (Blue Hill Rd), then follow the brown signs.

Overall, Beartown State Forest is the 11th most popular hiking trail of all 36 hikes in Massachusetts. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Beartown State Forest including October State Forest, Chester-Blandford State Forest and Monroe State Forest.
