Hiking The Burnt Mountain

The 11th most popular hiking trail in North Carolina.

Southeast of Brevard and north of Cedar Mountain in the Dupont State Forest, the 7 mile Burnt Mountain / Corn Mill loop is a fantastic hiking trail.

To reach the trailhead from Brevard, follow US276 south for 9 miles to Cedar Mountain. Turn left onto Cascade Lake Road for 2 miles and look for parking area on left.

Start hiking up Corn Mill Shoals Road past the yellow gate. Turn left on the second trail for a steep climb to slick rock sections. Follow painted arrows to the top of the hill and on down. At the powerlines, turn right onto a dirt road leading to Bridal Vail Trail. Turn right onto Bridal Vail Trail back to Corn Mill Shoals Road. Turn left onto the road and then take the next right onto Little River Trail, which climbs and becomes Burnt Mountain Trail. Descend off the other side back down to Corn Mill Shoals Road. Turn left to head back to the parking area.

The Dupont State Forest has 93 miles of trails and roads, of which, 33 miles are rolling single and doubletrack.

Overall, Burnt Mountain is the 11th most popular hiking trail of all 19 hikes in North Carolina. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Burnt Mountain including Black Mountain Trail, Buckhorn Gap / Avery Creek and Laurel Mountain.
