West of Wellfleet, the Great Island Trail is a 6.8 mile round trip hike through dunes, salt marshes and pine forests over to Great Island. There are two side hikes: a 1.4 mile hike to the old Tavern site, and a 2 mile out-and-back to Jeremy Point (submerged at high tide).
To reach the well marked trailhead parking area from US 6, follow the signs west to Wellfleet Center. Turn left on East Commercial Street towards Wellfleet Harbor. Turn right along shoreline on Chequesset Neck Road to the parking area.
Overall, Great Island Trail is the 8th most popular hiking trail of all 36 hikes in Massachusetts. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Great Island Trail including Cape Cod Trail, Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, West Barnstable Conservation Area and Nickerson State Park.
