North of NYC near Bear Mountain, the 5,000 acre Bear Mountain State Park is in the rugged mountains rising from the west bank of the Hudson River. The best hike in the park is the 4 mile loop to the top of Bear Mountain (1,300) along an original stretch of the Appalachian Trail.

The Bear Mountain State Park is located about 45 miles north of NYC off the Palisades Parkway or US87.

Overall, Bear Mountain Loop Trail is the 3rd most popular hiking trail of all 49 hikes in New York. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Bear Mountain Loop Trail including Stillman Trail, Clarence Fahnesock State Park, Bash Bish Falls, Sugar Hill State Forest and Breakneck Ridge Trail.
