East of Albany, a 6 mile stretch of Taconic Crest Trail (36 miles) passes through the 6,000 acre Taconic Ridge State Forest along the Massachussetts border.

A popular central hiking trailhead is on US 2 about 5 miles east of Petersburg.

Overall, Taconic Crest Trail is the 18th most popular hiking trail of all 49 hikes in New York. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Taconic Crest Trail including Escarpment Trail and Spruce Bog Trail.
