East of Syracuse and northeast of Fayetteville, the Green Lakes State Park has 20 miles of trails shared by hikers, bikers and cross country skiers. The trails loop around both lakes, which were carved by water flowing off glaciers. These meromictic lakes are deep with distinct water layers forming the intense blue-green color. Beyond the lakes, the trails pass through mature upland hardwood forests.
To reach the trailhead from Syracuse, follow US481 to Exit 3. Head east on SR 5 towards Fayettville. In Fayetteville, turn left heading north on S257 (it merges with SR290) for about 4 miles. The park entrance is on the right.
Overall, Green Lakes State Park is the 21st most popular hiking trail of all 49 hikes in New York. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Green Lakes State Park including Highland Forest County Park, Brookfield Trail System and Old Erie Canal.
