West of Blacksburg in the Jefferson National Forest, the Trails of Dismal is a 20 mile hiking trail network through remote, challenging terrain near Falls Of Dismal.

To reach the hiking trailhead from Mechanicsburg, head east on SR42 for 2.6 miles. Turn left heading north on SR606 for 1 mile. Turn right heading northeast on SR201 to trailhead parking area.

Overall, Trails Of Dismal is the 13th most popular hiking trail of all 23 hikes in Virginia. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Trails Of Dismal including Seven Sisters Trail, Devils Fork Loop Trail, Crawfish/Channel Rock Trails, Tract Fork Trail and Laurel Fork Trail.
