Hiking The Mt Aetna Tract

The 14th most popular hiking trail in Maryland.

Southeast of Grantsville and west of Frostburg, the 700 acre Mt. Aetna Tract of the Savage River State Forest has 11 miles of trails and doubletracks open to hiking, mountain biking and cross country skiing.

A great starting point is the Savage River Lodge.

To reach the trailhead from Baltimore, head west on US70 past Cumberland to US68. Head west on US68 to Exit 29 (Finzel). Head south on Beall School Road for 1 mile. Turn right on Frostburg Road staying left at fork for 2.6 miles. Turn right on Mt. Aetna Road and continue to lodge.

Overall, Mt Aetna Tract is the 14th most popular hiking trail of all 20 hikes in Maryland. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Mt Aetna Tract including Meadow Mountain Trail System, Monroe Run Trail System, Negro Mountain Trail System, Margraff Plantation Trail and Sugarloaf Mountain Preserve.
