On the south side of Hovey Lake, the Oakwood Trail is an 11 mile route open to hiking. It is primarily flat with occasional gentle hills. The hiking trailhead is located on the south side of Hovey Lake on FS2376C.

Overall, Oakwood Trail is the 24th most popular hiking trail of all 32 hikes in Michigan. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Oakwood Trail including North Country Trail, Grand Island National Recreation Area, Pine Marten Run, Grand Island Trail/Bay de Noc and Brunos Run Trail.
