Hiking The Dismal River Trail

North of North Platte and southwest of Dunning in the Nebraska National Forest, the Dismal River Trail is a 11 mile one-way route open to hiking. The loose-sand route runs from the Dismal River Trailhead to the NFS Whitetail Campground.

To reach the trailhead from Halsey, head west on SR2 for 1.5 miles. Turn left heading south on SR S86B towards the Scott Lookout Tower. Just bofore the lookout tower, turn left heading south on Circle Road (aka FS203). Continue south for 3 miles to a wide open area on the east side of the road near the junction with FS201.

Overall, Dismal River Trail is the 3rd most popular hiking trail of all 4 hikes in Nebraska.
