The Balsam Mountain Trail is a 10 mile route open to hiking and horses.

To reach the hiking trailhead from the Oconaluftee Visitor Center head a little south to a left (east) on Big Cove Road (Straight Fork Road). Travel about 14 miles and look to the left for Roundbottom Horse Camp. Camp and head to the trail from here.

Overall, Balsam Mountain Trail is the 17th most popular hiking trail of all 23 hikes in Tennessee. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Balsam Mountain Trail including Wolf Ridge Trail, Cooper Road Trail, Lakeshore Trail, Deep Creek Trail, Foothills Parkway and Welch Ridge Trail.
