East of Cantwell, the Butte Creek Trail is open to hiking and ATV riding. The trail is well defined for the first twelve miles and gradually becomes less distinct. However increasing use in the area has been pushing the established trail farther back.

To reach the trailhead from Cantwell, head east on Denali Highway (SR8) for 54 miles. The trail heads south from the highway.

Overall, Butte Creek Trail is the 40th most popular hiking trail of all 54 hikes in Alaska.
