On Lanai, the Munro Trail is a 5.5 mile hike up through groves of Norfolk pine. The 7 hour round trip route follows an ancient caldera rim along a rasorback spine to the island high point, Mount Lanaihale (3370 ft).
To reach the hiking trailhead from Lanai City, head north on SR440 past the Lodge at Koele. This road eventually becomes Keomoku Road (SR44). About 1 mile past the Lodge at Koele, turn right at Cemetary Road. At about 0.3 miles, there is an old Japanese cemetary. From here, there is an intersection with three dirt roads. Follow the left branch which should be marked with signs to the Munro Trail parking about 0.3 miles ahead. Note: the old parking area used to be off the center dirt road, but a new golf course has rerouted the trailhead. On a rainy day, expect the route to be slick and boggy with major washouts.
Overall, Munro Trail is the 34th most popular hiking trail of all 45 hikes in Hawaii.
