Southeast of Crested Butte and northeast of Almont near Taylor Reservoir, the Timberline Trail #414 runs 20 miles along the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness boundary at the Continental Divide above 10,000'. The trail runs north from Mirror Lake to Pieplant Creed Road.
The most popular place to start is at the northern trailhead. The trail runs southeast for about 13 miles to Texas Lakes. There are several cross roads (and the Colorado Trail along Trail #571) to form loops of varying length.
To reach the hiking trailhead from Gunnison, head north on SR135 to Almont. Head northeast on Taylor River Road (FS742). At the reservoir, veer left heading north on Taylor River Road. Just before the intersection with Spring Creek Road, turn right heading northeast on Red Mountain Drive (CR742E) up to the trailhead.
Overall, Timberline Trail is the 57th most popular hiking trail of all 72 hikes in Colorado.
