North of Murphysboro in the Shawnee National Forest, the Johnson Creek Recreation Area has a trail system open to hiking.

To reach the Johnson Creek Recreation Area from Murphysboro, head west on SR149 for 6.9 miles to US3. Head north on SR3 for 4.5 miles to SR151. Turn right heading north on SR151 for 4.3 miles. The trailhead is after the first swimming area and campground on your left.

Overall, Johnson Creek is the 16th most popular hiking trail of all 17 hikes in Illinois. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Johnson Creek including River-To-River Trail - East, Garden Of The Gods, Kinkaid Lake Trail, Cedar Lake Trails, Beaver Trail and River-To-River Trail - West.
