The City of Montesano City Forest is a 4,946 acre parcel managed for a mix of uses including timber management, fish and wildlife management, and recreation management. Trails are open to hiking and biking and many different length loops can be created by linking the trails and roads throughout the forest. It is also possible to connect to neighboring Sylvia Lake State Park. Most of the trails travel through dense forests consisting of douglas fir, hemlock, cedar, spruce, and alder. Since this is an actively managed forest, please respect all logging/thinning operations and closed areas.

To reach the trailhead from Olympia travel west on Hwy 101 to SR 8. Travel west on SR 8 until it turns into SR 12 just before the town of Elma, continue west on SR 12 to the town of Montesano to the Lake Sylvia exit. Park at Lake Sylvia State Park, one mile north.

Overall, Montesano City Forest is the 51st most popular hiking trail of all 56 hikes in Washington.
