Southwest of Ely, the Taconite State Trail is a 159 mile hiking route from Coleraine to Ely.

To reach the Grand Rapids trailhead from the intersection of SR 38 and 8th Street in Grand Rapids, go east on 8th Street for almost .5 mile. Turn left (north) on 3rd Avenue NE and go over .5 mile to parking area.

Overall, Taconite State Trail is the 31st most popular hiking trail of all 31 hikes in Minnesota.
