The Continental Divide Trail runs from Mexico northward to the Canadian border. A long hiking segment passes through New Mexico. The section in New Mexico can be conveniently divided into 6 sections.

The fifth section from the south is a 100 mile section from US40 in the south to US550 in the north. About 50 miles of this section are across BLM land, and some passes over Navajo Indian Reservation.

Overall, Section 5 is the 38th most popular hiking trail of all 39 hikes in New Mexico.
