The Continental Divide Trail runs from Mexico northward to the Canadian border. A long hiking segment passes through New Mexico. The section in New Mexico can be conveniently divided into 6 sections.

The northernmost section is a 90 mile segment from US550 to the Colorado border. It passes through the Santa Fe National Forest and the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation.

Overall, Section 6 - Northern Terminus is the 35th most popular hiking trail of all 39 hikes in New Mexico.
