Northeast of Sacramento and El Dorado Hills, the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area has 80 miles of hiking trails.
To reach the trailhead from Auburn-Folsom Road (which runs between its two namesake communities on the west side of the lake), turn east on Horseshoe Bar Road and follow it to its end at a gravel road, a parking area for horse trailers.
Overall, Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is the 72nd most popular hiking trail of all 88 hikes in California. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Folsom Lake State Recreation Area including Western States Trail, Salmon Falls Trail, Foothills Divide, Summit Trail, Owl Creek Trail and Empire Mine State Park.
