West of Wellington and northwest of Karori, the Skyline Track (aka Skyline Walkway) is a dual-use route that runs for 20km from the Makara Peak MTB Park to Old Coach Road. From the Skyline Track, there are links south to Te Kopahau and south to South Coast, and to the north to both Ohariu Valley and Porirua (some of these links are not open to mountain biking).
To reach the trailhead from Wellington on SH1, use the ferry terminal exit for Aotea Quay Avenue. Head south on Aeota Quay for about a kilometer. Turn right on Whitmore Road, which becomes Bowen Road, for 0.7km. Turn left on Tinakori Road for 1.6km. Turn left on Glenmore Street for 0.2km. Continue straight on Claytor Street for 1.1km. Turn left on Karori Road for 2.5km. Turn right heading north on Makara Road for about 1km. There is a small parking area on the right for the Skyline Track.
Overall, Skyline Track is the 10th most popular hiking trail of all 15 hikes in New Zealand.
