Hiking The Dun Mountain

The 12th most popular hiking trail in New Zealand.

Southeast of Nelson, the Dun Mountain area has a wide range of trails and 4WD roads to explore. There are several loop options including following the old Dun Mountain Walkway up and riding singletrack back down.

To reach the trailhead from Nelson, head south on Tasman Street. Tasman Street turns into Brook Street. Continue south for 1.8km on Brook Street. Turn left on Tantragee Road and the signed parking area is immediately on the left. There are trails from the parking area or continue up the road to meet the Dun Mountain Walkway.

Overall, Dun Mountain is the 12th most popular hiking trail of all 15 hikes in New Zealand. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Dun Mountain including Nelson, Rossland, Nydia Track and Heady Track.
