Southwest of Canberra and west of Cooma in the Kosciusko National Park, the Snowy Mountain Range in the Australian Alps has many trails of interest to hikers. The various tracks will take you past crystal clear streams, glacial lakes, deep gorges, high peaks, historic huts and other culturally significant sites.
To reach the Kosciuszko National Park, fly into Canberra and follow Highway 23 south to Cooma, which makes a great base. Then head west on Highway 18 to Pine Valley. Veer left on Kosciousko Road heading southwest through Berridale to Jindabyne. Just past Jindabyne, turn left on Alpine Way Road and follow into the Snowy Mountains.
