Southwest of Salzburg, the Kitzbuhl (pop. 7800) is known as one of the best alpine ski areas in Europe, but also has an extensive 120 km hiking trail system used for nordic skiing in the winter. The town is old, lovely and romantic, but still has an active nightlife and can get crowded at times.

To reach this area from Salzburg, follow Route 215 west through Germany. Near Lofer, head west on Route 704 and then head southwest on Route 312. Near St. Johann, head south on Route 161 into Kitzbuhel.

Overall, Kitzbuhel is the 2nd most popular hiking trail of all 15 hikes in Austria.
