Hiking The Saariselka
The MOST popular hiking trail in Finland.

In the Finnish Lapland of Saariselka, there is a 40 km trail with two refreshing river crossings. Start from Saariselkä and head south on a trail running alongside Highway 4. After a while you turn right onto a forest road which soon turns into a trail. The first river-crossing comes here (not too deep but always cold). Now youre in real wildernes, so be careful. After going over some fells, the trail dips steeply into a valley and you come up on the second river. You ll have to push up the other bank, but soon youll be on a sand road, which is predominantly downhill. Following this is another sand road going up over the shoulder of mt.Kaunispää. Here I suggest you take the tarmac road up to the summit for a great downhill into Saariselkä. The hiking trail is marked, but I strongly suggest getting a map
