Hiking The Cedar Lake Trails

South of Murphysboro in the Shawnee National Forest, the Cedar Lake Trail System consists of three hiking routes totalling 14 miles. The trail system rolls along the hills on the west side of Ceder Lake. The system is accessed by 4 trailheads.

To reach the hiking trailheads from Murphysboro, head south on SR127 for 10 miles. Turn left onto County Road 17 and travel 1.3 miles to Cove Hollow Road. Turn right and follow Cove Hollow Road to a dead end and the trailhead.

Overall, Cedar Lake Trails is the 4th most popular hiking trail of all 17 hikes in Illinois. Several of the better hiking trails are nearby Cedar Lake Trails including River-To-River Trail - East, Garden Of The Gods, Kinkaid Lake Trail, Beaver Trail, River-To-River Trail - West and Johnson Creek.
