Near Flintstone, the 40,000 acre Green Ridge State Forest has a network of 45 miles of trails through oak forest. This region is very dry, so the hiking is almost year-round (so dry that theres even prickly pear cactus!).
A local favorite is the 24 mile backpacking trail system with four Adirondack-style shelters for camping along the way.
The four main trails are: Pine Lick Blue Trail (6 mi.); Long Pond Red Trail (7 mi.); Deep Run / Big Run Green Trail (7 mi.); and Log Roll Orange Trail (4 mi.).
There is also the nearby 18 mile C&O towpath trail.
Overall, Green Ridge is the 2nd most popular hiking trail of all 20 hikes in Maryland.
