West of Baltimore near Ellicott City, the 14,500 acre Patapsco Valley State Park stretches 35 miles from Ellicott City to Sykesville along the Patapsco River. It encompasses several distinct recreation areas and has over 170 miles of trails.

The 1,400 acre McKeldin recreation area has 8 miles of rolling wooded trails open to hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians.

To reach the trailhead from the Baltimore Beltway (US695), head west on US 70 for 9 miles to Exit 83. Head north on Marriottsville Road for 3 miles. The park entrance is on the right.

Overall, McKeldin Area is the 3rd most popular hiking trail of all 20 hikes in Maryland.
