North of Newark and Newton in Sussex County, the 15,700 Stokes State Forest has 35 miles of hiking trails.

The Tinsley Trail is a 6 mile trek to the summit of Sunrise Mountain for a vista of the surrounding hardwood forests. A 12.5 mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail also passes through the forest following Kittatinny Ridge

The trails are accessible off Coursen Road from SR206.

Overall, Tinsley Trail is the 7th most popular hiking trail of all 29 hikes in New Jersey.
