East of Eagle River in northeastern Wisconsin, the Anvil National Recreation Trail system has 12 miles of hiking trails through dense maple forests. The Anvil Trail system is adjacent to Anvil Lake Campground and also connects with the Nicolet North Trail system and to the Franklin Lake Campground via a connector trail. The most popular loop is the 7 mile route formed by combining the Ninemile Run Trail, Lake Loop and Devils Run Trail.

To reach the hiking trailhead for the Anvil National Recreation Trail from Eagle River, take State Highway 70 east for 9 miles to Parking Lot #1 on right (south), which can accommodate 20 vehicles. Or take State Highway 70 east 8 miles to Military Road (FR 2178), and turn right (south) to Parking Lot #2 on the left (east), which can accommodate 12 vehicles.

Overall, Anvil Trails is the 2nd most popular hiking trail of all 18 hikes in Wisconsin.
