North of Waimea on Kauai, the Haele ele Ridge Road is a 10 mile out and back route open to horseback riding. This red dirt road through the Puu Ka Pele Forest Reserve can be challenging since the elevation ranges from 3,150 feet down to 1,300 feet, and it can be quite slippery when wet. There are several side trails and roads worth exploring.
Southeast of Princeville on Kauai, the Princeville Ranch has miles of horseback riding trails. The Princeville Ranch does rent horses. They have a great tour up to Kalihiwai Falls. Keep in mind that frequent rain showers are common in this area.
North of Lihue and east of Kapa'a on Kauai, the Esprit De Corps Riding Academy provides a variety of horseback riding tours on eastern island trails. This is one of the few places on the island that caters to experienced riders, and also provides instruction on how to improve your riding technique.
Southwest of Lihue and east of Poi'pu on Kauai, there are miles of horseback riding trails through the rugged and scenic Maha ulepu area. Horseback riding tours are offered through CJM Country Stables, which is located 1.5 miles east of the Hyatt Resort. They also have a tour down to Haula Beach. There tours are known to be single-file, nose-to-tail rides with no-trotting.
