Southeast of Syracuse near Sherburne in southeastern Madison County, the 130 mile Brookfield Trail System for horseback riding traverses the 13,000 acre Brookfield State Forest. The horse trail system is also shared with mountain bikers and is marked with numbering. The rolling route combines trails and closed forest service roads.
Southeast of Syracuse and east of Fabius in Onondaga County, the 2,700 acre Highland Forest County Park has over 20 miles of trails open to horseback riding. This area is known as the Adirondacks of Central New York with rugged forest terrain. Pre-registration is required to ride on park trails.
