Near Oroville, the 28,450 acre Lake Oroville State Recreation Area has 20 miles of horse trails.
To reach the trailhead from Highway 70, go east on Highway 162 (Oroville Dam Blvd.). Continue on Oroville Dam Blvd., turning right at Olive Hwy. (Highway 162), proceed approximately 6 miles on Olive Highway to Kelly Ridge Road. Turn left and Kelly Ridge Road ends in the Visitor Center parking lot.
Overall, Lake Oroville State Recreation Area is the 12th most popular horse trail of all 81 horseback rides in California. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Lake Oroville State Recreation Area including Western States Horse Trail, Foothills Divide Horse Trail, Mitchell Canyon Trail, Owl Creek Trail, Empire Mine State Park and Summit Trail.
